The Kennel Club's Assured Breeder Scheme (ABS) was established in 2004 to provide a framework for encouraging breeders to produce healthy. well adjusted puppies in a suitable environment. KC Assured Breeder Advisers visit the kennels of every member to ensure the breeder is fulfilling the requirements laid down by the Kennel Club.
People who buy puppies from KC Assured Breeders gain the assurance that the breeder has undertaken to follow basic good breeding practices by:
- Registering all breeding stock with the Kennel Club
- Permanently identifying all breeding stock with either microchip, tattoo or DNA profile
- Providing hygienic whelping facilities
- Using the relevant breed health schemes. In the case of Rough Collies these should include DNA testing for MDR1 and the KC/BVA schemes for hip scoring and eye screening (PRA and CEA)
- Providing suitable socialisation opportunities for the puppies
- Providing written advice to new owners on continuing socialisation, training, exercise, grooming, diet, exercise, worming and vaccination programmes
- Providing the new owner with a Puppy Sales' Contract which explains the breed health issues and any KC Endorsements that may have been placed on a puppy by the breeder
- Providing pre- and after-sales advice for the new puppy owner
- Providing help with re-homing of a dog if necessary
** In October 2009 I was selected as a KC ABS Regional Adviser for East Anglia and visit the homes of other Assured Breeders to ensure they are following the ABS guidelines and relevant health requirements/recommendations.
