HEALTH STATEMENT:
Rough Collies are relatively healthy dogs and, apart from possible hip problems, they have issues with multi-drug sensitivity (MDR1) and eyes (CEA and PRA). With regard to CEA (Collie Eye Anomaly) it is believed that, until recently, none of our British-bred Collies possessed any clear CEA genes. Upon clinical examination many appeared 'clear' though they actually possess two gene mutations (one from the sire and one from the dam) so their genetic status is 'CEA-affected'.
The British form of late-onset PRA has not been diagnosed for several years now and it is believed improved feeding methods (the addition of vitamin E supplements to complete feeds) is the reason.
In 2009 one brave breeder imported several Canadian/American-bred Rough Collie males to the UK, all of which were genetically normal for CEA/CH and MDR1. I made the decision to use one of these dogs on Karibuni Tennessee Waltz (Tina), who was MDR1-clear, and in July 2011 she produced a litter of six puppies - all were MDR1 clear and CEA/CH clear-eyed carriers.
Now, with a good choice of MDR1-clear and clear-eyed carrier half brothers in the UK, I can move forward with the confidence that my line will eventually be free from possible MDR1 and CEA problems.
I have always been committed to the health and wellbeing of my dogs and, as Health Coordinator for the East Anglian Collie Association, feel it most important to set a good example. I joined the Kennel Club's Assured Breeder Scheme at its inception in 2004 and, since 2009, have enjoyed the role of KC Breeder Assessor for East Anglia.
